Friday, 9 March, 2018

A short film by a group of Bath Spa University students has been nominated for the Royal Television Society of West England’s Student Awards.

Me, Myself, Why, which was produced by Bath Spa University final year BA (Hons) Film, Television and Digital Production students, was selected for the awards in the category of comedy and entertainment.

The film was produced by students Owen Dando (writer and director), Emily Doble (producer), Lucy Steel (camera operator), Tommi Floor (lighting) and Bailey Mitchell (sound), and follows a man who is going on his first ever blind date.

Owen said: “I was extremely humbled and surprised when I found out that our film had been nominated. I’m so grateful for my incredible and dedicated crew. The production would not have been possible without them.”

Lucy added: “Working with a small crew was a great opportunity to learn about different areas of production. To be recognised by the Royal Television Society is truly an honour.”

The Royal Television Society Student Television Awards showcases the best film and television work by undergraduate and postgraduate students from universities across the UK.

Each entry is judged for originality and audience appeal. Awards are presented to students whose work demonstrates outstanding visual and aural creativity, innovation, initiative and story-telling.

Ann-Marie McCormak, writer, producer and director, and Senior Lecturer in Scriptwriting and Filmmaking at Bath Spa University, oversaw the students’ production.

She said: “I am delighted for Owen and his production crew. Owen is a talented writer. What I particularly liked about his script was his ability to put heart into the characters. The team were very committed and the editing process benefited the film greatly and paid homage to Owen’s original script.”

Supported by the Pinewood Studios Group, Bath Spa University’s Film, Television and Digital Production course combines theory and practice to provide students with a broad understanding of the film and television industries, and the professional skills needed to work as part of a production crew.

The University has two TV studios, a gallery and production suites on campus. Bath Spa Film, Television and Digital Production students also benefit from field trips to commercial TV studios. Students on the course recently visited the set of hit BBC quiz show, Pointless, and the Made in Bristol studio.
