Bath Spa University student recreates Georgian Bath with World Heritage Day walking trail

Friday, 20 April, 2018

A Bath Spa University student has created a walking trail which will transport local residents and tourists back to the Georgian era, allowing them to discover how visitors to Bath spent their time.

MA Heritage Management student and local resident, Zoe Hughes Gough, developed the trail for her final placement project with the Roman Baths.

The trail will be piloted during Bath's World Heritage Day event on Sunday 22 April and Zoe will be handing out printed copies of the hour-long circular route and a feedback survey, which will help improve the trail for future use in the planned World Heritage Centre on York Street.

Bath's World Heritage Day event will take place on the lawn in front of the Royal Crescent.

Zoe said: "As part of my MA I chose to complete an extended placement project. I wanted to focus on heritage interpretation for my project so I decided to take a placement with the Roman Baths. I have been working on the Archway Project and the walking trail I created is a part of the project."

The Archway Project aims to provide more opportunities for people to engage with history and learn about Bath's heritage.

Zoe worked with the Roman Baths' Learning and Participation Manager, Lindsey Braidley, and Archway Centre Project Manager, Jenna Spellane, to incorporate aspects of Georgian life and reasons why Bath has been inscribed as a World Heritage Site into the trail.

She added: "I've been following the Archway Project since its inception and it has been a pleasure working with Lindsey and Jenna. I've learnt a lot from them about the heritage industry and the importance of making heritage accessible to the general public.

"I've always been interested in heritage. After working in publishing for several years, I decided I wanted a career change and a career in heritage management really appealed to me.

"My MA in Heritage Management at Bath Spa has given me a broader understanding of the issues that heritage organisations face. I've also had the opportunity to make a number of group visits to different heritage organisations and sites, and get a glimpse behind the scenes, which has been both insightful and enjoyable."
