Award-winning writer for young people brings the 'power of writing' to Bath
Thursday, 27 June, 2019On Wednesday 26 June 2019, as part of National Writing Day, multi award-winning author David Almond ran a series of workshops in Bath Central Library, inspiring adults and children from the local community to write. The workshops were organised by Bath Festivals in collaboration with Paper Nations, a Creative Writing Incubator based at in the TRACE centre at Bath Spa University.
The workshops drew from David’s recent statement on the Power of Writing, which encourages anyone to try writing creatively. He recalls his childhood; experimenting with words, playing with language. He adds, “Each one of us has a fund of stories just waiting to be told.” The statement is available on www.papernations.org.
Local adults and children took part in the sessions, some of whom had never written a story before.
“The thing that struck me was the great excitement amongst the people in the room and how easily David made us see how wonderful the imagination is,” said one participant.

Another added, “David’s words gave me courage with my own writing.”
The workshops took place against a display created by Paper Nations and Bath Festivals, which provides ideas and resources to inspire writers of all ages and experience to write creatively. The display will be in Bath Central Library all summer, as well as several other libraries across the region. If you’d like to order a display for your library then get in touch with Paper Nations at writers@papernations.org.
A local resident who took part in the workshops said, “It’s wonderful to see writing in a public space like the library, and to see schools and members of the public engaging with authors. David Almond is a brilliant writer. His workshop was inspirational, and I enjoyed receiving his wisdom and learning about his early experiences as a writer. It would be great to see more events in the library like this.”
Professor Bambo Soyinka, Director of Paper Nations said, “Libraries are a source of inspiration and support, a rare free space where writers can come to read, write, and explore ideas. That’s why we collaborated with them on National Writing Day and will continue to work with them through the whole summer.”
