Bath Spa University awards second Professorship in a year

Bath Spa University academic, Professor Sarah Hackett, has become the university’s second Professor of History over the past year, after receiving recognition for her work, including the integration of Muslim migrant communities.

Professor Hackett, who specialises in Modern European History and the migration, diversity and integration of ethnic minorities across Britain and Europe, has been recognised for her high levels of achievement within the field.

Professor Hackett now makes up part of the 38 per cent of female Professors at Bath Spa University, a figure far ahead of the national average which sits at 26 per cent.

Professor Hackett said: “I am delighted to have been awarded a Professorship in History and I am very grateful to Bath Spa University for its continued support. It's an honour to work in the field of migration history, and a pleasure to research migration, diversity and the integration of ethnic minority communities in historical perspectives, both in Britain and further afield. I've been incredibly fortunate that my work has been facilitated by the kind and generous support of local archives and members of Muslim migrant communities.”

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sue Rigby, added: “Sarah is a well-respected academic and Bath Spa University is delighted to provide recognition for her work through the award of a professorship. If this well-merited promotion also plays a part in correcting the under-representation of women in UK Universities, then we are delighted to be able to do this.”

Professor Hackett’s current research is focused on European Migration, in particular, European Muslim migration in the post-1945 era. She has authored two books, one of which, “Foreigners, Minorities and Integration: The Muslim Immigrant Experience in Britain and Germany” was published in 2013 while her latest book is due for release in 2020.
