Recognition for Bath Spa Travel and Nature Writing students

Tuesday, 29 January, 2019

Two Bath Spa students have been longlisted for a prestigious travel writing award.

Hilary Macmillan and Jacqueline Hitt, current students on the MA in Travel and Nature Writing course, are among 20 names longlisted for New Travel Writer of the Year Competition 2019. The competition, open to unpublished travel writers, invited submissions of 600-800 words on the theme ‘Out of the Blue’.

The competition is supported by Bradt Travel Guides and incorporates the Edward Stanford Travel Writing Awards.

The longlist was announced on 3 January 2019. Seven judges pick a shortlist of three who will be invited to the Edward Stanford Travel Writing Awards ceremony in February and the overall winner will be offered a break for two in Lapland. Two runners up will be offered places on the annual Bradt Travel Writing Seminar in November 2019.

Preliminary judge Janice Booth commented: “The entries include a lot of good and evocative writing, and the judges will need some detailed and passionate discussions before finally deciding which should go through to the final stage.”

Bath Spa Associate Lecturer Dr Gail Simmons who teaches the travel writing component of the MA course said: “We strongly encourage our students to enter competitions as it’s good practice and, if successful, a confidence boost.”

Hilary Macmillan, one of those longlisted, said: “I’m so thrilled. The course is clearly making a difference already!”

The winner will be announced in late February.
