Students head 'down under' as part of new study abroad partnership
Monday, 17 February, 2020Six students from Bath Spa University have jetted off to Australia to study at the University of Adelaide as part of a new study abroad partnership between the two universities.
Undergraduate students Amelia Fielding, Kirsty Torrance, Karishma Jobanputra, Elliott Copson, Olivia Tuck and Beric Garrett are the first cohort to go abroad for the semester through the new scheme, which will also see Bath Spa welcome six students from Adelaide.
As part of the exchange, the Bath Spa students will receive an Australian Government ‘Endeavour Leadership Programme’ bursary of $5000 Australian dollars to support them with their overseas learning activities. Students visiting from Adelaide will also benefit from the same funding.
The Bath students will also be among some of the first to study the University of Adelaide’s new creativity, collaboration and curation module that will provide them with the invaluable opportunity to work directly with Adelaide Festival of the Arts.
The relationship between the two universities developed out of their involvement in the Global Academy of Liberal Arts (GALA), an international network established by Bath Spa in 2014.
Ian Gadd, Professor of English Literature at Bath Spa University and Academic Director of GALA said: “I’m delighted that we have sent such a great group of Bath Spa students, from subjects as diverse as criminology, biology, creative computing and creative writing, to launch what promises to be a really valuable partnership for the University.
“We are also very much looking forward to hosting students from Adelaide here at Bath Spa. I know from my own experience as an international student just how transformative studying abroad can be, and exchanges programmes like this offer unique opportunities to enrich students’ learning and broaden their perspective on the world.”
The cohort of local students who left for Adelaide this week have also been supported by Bath Spa University’s Outward Mobility Fund, which was established in 2017 to assist those wishing to embark on international placements, research or study trips that are related to their undergraduate degree course.
The Global Academy of Liberal Arts (GALA) is an international community of diverse, innovative, and socially responsible universities and colleges, whose aims are to transform lives and to enhance global understanding through interdisciplinary collaboration in teaching and research. The network is managed from Bath Spa by a team led by Academic Director Professor Ian Gadd. Find out more about GALA.
