TSI Students

Statement (13 May 2025)

We are grateful for all the support and patience from our applicants, students and their families as we have worked through what is a very complex and challenging situation.

We are pleased to confirm that all final year students studying for a Bath Spa University degree will be able to complete their studies and graduate as planned, subject to their assessments. This is great news for all those students who have worked so hard on their final performances and dissertations.

For applicants and those students in their first and second years we are in the final stages of being able to present a range of options on how they will be able to complete their studies. We are in regular communication with both our applicants and students, and we are planning a series of meetings over the next week where our team will be on hand to offer advice and guidance to help them determine the best option available to them.

Aside from resolving the practical and logistical challenges, our focus has been on the welfare and wellbeing of our applicants and students who were studying at The Scottish Institute for a Bath Spa University degree. All students have been offered support from our Student Wellbeing Team (SWS), and access to the University's 24/7 student helpline. The University is also offering TSI students access to support from our Academic Skills Service and Student Hub and Careers and Employability team.

We know that this situation is challenging for us all, and we are doing everything we can to make decisions and move quickly to ensure minimum disruption to our students.

Student Protection Plan

The Bath Spa University Student Protection Plan sets out what students can expect to happen should a course, campus, or institution close and the purpose of the plan is to ensure that students can continue and complete their studies, or can be compensated if this is not possible.

Marking, assessments and graduation

I’ve submitted an assessment. Can you tell me what I need to do?

I’ve submitted my assessment, but I am not sure if it has been received or marked. Can you tell me what I need to do?

The University is working to review the assessed work that is on the TSI systems to support the continuation of your studies. This includes collating marked work ready for moderation by BSU staff, and to mark any work that is outstanding.

To help us with this process, if you have submitted work that you have not received marks back for yet, or you are due to submit work, you can resubmit your work to tsistudents@bathspa.ac.uk and the University will then acknowledge receipt. This will support us to ensure minimal interruption or impact to your studies.

To submit your work to us for marking we will need the information below:

  1. Please include in the subject title of your email your course title, the module name or code, and the assessment name and number if you know it.
  2. In the body of your email, please confirm whether you are submitting an assessment that has not yet been marked (or that you have not received marks back for) or you are submitting your assessment for the first time.
  3. Include your full name, date of birth, student number, course of study and personal email address so we can keep our records updated.
  4. Please attach a copy of your work in the format that you have been asked to submit your work in
  5. Send your email and attachments to tsistudents@bathspa.ac.uk and we’ll acknowledge receipt, log your submission and make arrangements for your work to be marked.

I’m due to submit an assessment. Can you tell me how I can submit my work?

If you’re able to submit work that is due on time, this will support us to ensure minimal interruption or impact to your studies. You can submit your work to tsistudents@bathspa.ac.uk using the above guidance.

I’ve missed an assessment deadline and now my work is late. Will I be penalised?

If you’ve been unable to submit work that is due because of the current situation, you won’t be penalised for submitting your work late or requesting an extension; and you won’t need to submit a formal exceptional circumstance claim.

To ensure we can support the timely progression of your studies, please stay in touch with us if you’ve missed an assessment deadline so that we can provide the right support to you in completing your assignments and maintain the correct records that allows us to confirm your results at the end of the year.

Please write to us at tsistudents@bathspa.ac.uk with the detail of the assessment, including when the original due date was. If you’re ready to submit your work then please follow the instructions above to submit your work to us, or if you need additional time, then you can request an extension which we will acknowledge and log.

When will my marks be available to me?

The University is working to collate work that is already marked by your teaching staff, so that it can undertake its processes for moderation by our academic team and review by our external examiners. These marks will then be processed through our assessment boards. For work that was not marked by your teaching staff, we’re working to undertake this marking by our academic team and confirm your results.

We will be working to prioritise the confirmation of marks for final years students so that students can graduate on time. These results are due to be released to students on 7 July following the meeting of our Central Assessment Board.

Confirmed marks for first- and second-year students are also due to be released on the 7 July; and we’ll keep students informed if there is to be any delay to this timeline.

I haven’t passed my assessment. Will my resubmission be capped at the pass mark?

If you’re submitting your reassessment at any point from Friday 9 May until the end of the academic year for work that you previously failed then your marks for these reassessments won’t be capped at the pass mark and you won’t need to submit a claim for extenuating circumstances.

I’ve passed my work but I’m not happy with my mark. Can I have my work remarked?

The University moderates all work to ensure that marks are fairly awarded in line with the marking criteria. To ensure the fair application of academic standards, marks are therefore not amended or reissued in response to student feedback.

However, we recognise the impact that the circumstances have had on students following the closure of TSI. Therefore, if you’ve completed an assessment on or after Friday 9 May, and you’ve passed that work but believe that your performance on that assessment was impacted by the closure of TSI, you can ask to resubmit that work for an uncapped mark as part of our reassessment round and be awarded the higher of your marks.

Please note that if you are undertaking reassessments for passed work, this will lengthen the time it takes for us to confirm the completion of your award (if you are a final year) or the completion of your level of study (if you are a first or second year), and this could impact your graduation or onward progression to another provider to complete your studies.

Can I get a transcript for my credits earned so far?

The University can provide transcripts for credit gained during the 22/23 and 23/24 academic years – please contact tsistudents@bathspa.ac.uk if you’d like to request this. However, you may want to wait until all outstanding marks have been confirmed for the 24/25 academic year after the 7 July, so that you can have a complete record of the credit you’ve achieved this year.

I am in my final year. Will I have a graduation ceremony?

Yes – we're looking forward to celebrating the hard work of our graduates! The University will host a graduation ceremony for graduating students this summer and will be in touch with further details in the coming weeks.

Continuing your studies

Am I still a current student following the closure of The Scottish Institute?

Yes – you’re still a current student studying for a degree with Bath Spa. We want to keep our personal details for you up to date so that we can communicate with you and so if you’re not receiving our emails, please contact us on tsistudents@bathspa.ac.uk with your full name, date of birth, course and level of study, as well as your email address.

I have a year or more left to complete my course. How will I complete my degree?

I still have a year or more left to complete my course – what is the University doing to help me complete my degree?

The University is putting in place arrangements to support you to complete your studies elsewhere so that the impact of the closure of your course is minimised; and we’re working with several different providers to identify options for your future study.

We’re in the final stages of undertaking a careful mapping exercise of similar degree courses on offer in Scotland and England to identify options for our first- and second-year students to transfer and complete their degrees with other providers. We’re also in contact with these providers to understand any requirements for their regulations and admission that we need to be aware of.

The University is looking to minimise the disruption and impact for you and so will be prioritising transfer of students to new awarding bodies.

Once we’ve undertaken this review exercise, we will be able to provide you with options for the completion of your studies.

Support for you

How do I access the Academic Skills service?

The Academic Skills Team service can provide support and help with your written assignments. They offer feedback on your written work alongside offering academic and digital skills workshops and advice on academic referencing.

Find out more about the range of services they offer on the ASk section of the website. Book a 1:1 appointment with our Academic Skills team here.

I'm finding this difficult. Can I access Student Wellbeing Services for support?

You will be able to make full use of our Student Wellbeing Services (SWS), which provides access to a range of professional services for all our students. The SWS team are available as a point of contact for matters which relate to your health, practical advice and guidance to do with your life as a student, including finance and/or a disability or specific learning difference.

You can find out more information via Wellbeing – Bath Spa University and if you would like to be contacted by Student Wellbeing Services, please contact tsistudents@bathspa.ac.uk where a member of our team will be in touch with you to arrange this.

How do I make a complaint?

We’re doing everything we can to respond to the circumstances in a way that supports you to complete your studies and minimises the impact for you. If we can be doing anything differently, please let us know.

Before you submit a formal complaint, we’d encourage you to talk to us and share your concerns. This is often the best way for us to resolve issues quickly. If, after talking to us, you choose to raise a formal complaint, you can see our Student Complaints Procedure.

The University will review your complaint and at the end of this process will issue you a Completion of Procedures letter. If you wish to take your complaint further at this stage, this is the document you will need to submit your case to the Office of the Independent Adjudicator (the OIA). The OIA is an independent body set up to review student complaints about higher education providers in England and Wales, and their service is free for students.

Fees and finance

Can I claim a refund or compensation?

Students don’t usually receive a refund of tuition fees for teaching that was delivered before a course or provider closes.

The University is working to ensure the continued delivery of students’ courses as quickly as possible and is working to confirm arrangements for the continuation of teaching and learning activities. The University is putting in place arrangements to minimise disruption to the teaching and assessment of students.

Once all options are confirmed the University will work with students to assess whether the options meet their needs and whether any refunds or compensation are appropriate.

How will the University support me with the cost of moving to another provider?

If I have to move to another provider, it will cost me money in accommodation, additional travel or childcare. How will the University support me?

We want to find an option for you to complete your studies that minimises disruption and cost to you, and so we want to hear from you through our 1:1 meetings, and via our tsistudents@bathspa.ac.uk inbox what your personal circumstances are in respect of things like accommodation, travel and caring responsibilities.

If you incur additional costs because of moving to another provider, the University will consider reasonable requests to compensate you appropriately.

I am worried about money. Will I get my next student loan payment?

The University is working with the Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS) or other relevant funder such as the Student Loan Company to ensure continued release of maintenance loan payments for the remainder of this academic year.

FAQs for applicants

I've accepted my course/am due to start at TSI in September. What can I do now?
