The Research Centre for Environmental Humanities is delighted to welcome Bristol-based nature writer Zakiya Mckenzie to talk about her environmental justice work with Ujima Radio, her experience delving into the archives of the Caribbean Literary Heritage project, and the joys and complexities of writing about woodlands as Forestry England's Writer-in-Residence.

About the speaker

Profile photoZakiya Mckenzie was born in London in the 1980's but grew up in Kingston, Jamaica. She returned to England in 2014 and now lives in Bristol. Zakiya is a storyteller and a PhD candidate at the University of Exeter on the Caribbean Literary Heritage project. She was the 2019 Forestry England Writer-in-Residence and her 2018 MRes from the University of Bristol investigated environmental and social implications of petroleum ‘discovery’ in Guyana. Zakiya has been a volunteer at Ujima 98FM community radio in Bristol since 2015 and was an ambassador of Ujima’s Black and Green initiative.
