Exploring writing and technology – call for participation in the next MIX conference
Friday, 11 November, 2016MIX is an event that has established itself as an innovative forum for the discussion and exploration of writing and technology, attracting an international cohort of contributors from the UK, Australia, and Europe as well as North and South America.
After the success of the last three MIX conferences, MIX 2017 returns to Bath Spa University’s Newton Park campus next July. The three-day conference will take place on Monday 10 to Wednesday 12 July 2017.
As the UK’s foremost provider of creative writing programmes at undergraduate, masters and PhD level, Bath Spa University is proud to host MIX 2017 to explore themes such as digital fiction, transmedia narrative, new reading habits and augmented reality.
Call for papers
This year the conference organisers would like to encourage the submission of research papers and artist or practitioner presentations that address the themes of revolutions, regenerations and reflections. They are interested in work that takes a wide variety of forms, including digital fiction and poetry, participatory media, digital art and text, collaborations between writers and technologists, hybrid and cross-media practice, transmedia practice, as well as addressing themes on the future of the book, new forms of publishing, convergent media cultures and new forms of digital curation. Read more about the criteria and submit papers here. Deadline 30 January.
MediaWall artwork commission
As part of the conference the University is looking to commission a writer or artistic team to create a new literary artwork for the University’s MediaWall.
MediaWall is a uniquely positioned digital gallery space situated in the new Commons building on the University’s Newton Park campus surrounded by green fields, hills and trees. The eight-metre high, 3 X 10 screen wall stands like a monolith awaiting an inscription.
Since its launch in June 2014 the MediaWall has exhibited a number of artworks including those by international artists Julian Opie and Bruce Munro.
The artwork will be displayed during the month of July 2017 and will need to include original writing from young people age eight to 14. The aim is to encourage a high level of engagement from young people across England and innovative methods for mass participation such as crowdsourcing will be welcomed. Read more about the requirements and to submit a proposal here. Deadline 14 November 2016.
The MIX 2017 conference will host a vibrant mix of academic papers, practitioner presentations, seminars, keynotes, discussions and workshops. Alongside scholars and researchers, artists, creative writers and creative technologists.
Keynote speakers include Professor Jon Dovey, Digital Culture Research Centre and Pervasive Media Studio at the University of the West of England, and Dr Elizabeth Evans, Assistant Professor in Film and Television Studies at the University of Nottingham.
Tickets will be available soon.
