Bath Spa alumni help 200 students with their studies
Thursday, 25 April, 2019Thanks to the continued generosity of our alumni and other supporters the Development and Alumni Relations Office (DARO) helped nearly 200 Bath Spa University students this year with funding from various awards and bursaries. This academic year the office gave out £105,200 to help students achieve their ambitions.
DARO offers several awards which allows students to take on projects and activities that they otherwise would not be able to do. This year students have received money from the International Travel Fund to work or study abroad in places such as China, Italy and Nepal. Awards from the Student Opportunities Fund have helped many students purchase supplies and equipment to complete their final year projects and dissertations, present work at conferences, take up short courses, and put on large-scale performances.
Several groups of students have also benefited from the Final Year Project Fund, a £1 for £1 match scheme which helps them put on degree shows and industry events, supplementing funds they raise using the university’s crowdfunding site, Launch Pad.
The awards and bursaries available through DARO are there to ensure students can pursue projects which will enhance their academic and future careers, as well as to help those who are experiencing hardship to complete their studies.
Naomi Box, Deputy Director of Development, said: “Seventy-five per-cent of Bath Spa students come from backgrounds that are disadvantaged in some way. The majority of them also work part-time on top of their studies, and their families aren’t always in a position to help, so they can’t rely on the Bank of Mum and Dad.”
The awards are funded by donations from Bath Spa alumni, as well as local philanthropists, friends and other supporters of the University.
