Services for students
The Writing and Learning Centre (WLC) can support you in your academic work.
You can only one appointment with us at any one time but you may book a second WLC appointment about any individual assignment once you have attended your first appointment. Appointments are available in-person and online. You can book up to four appointments for your dissertation. PhD thesis chapters are treated as individual assignments.
We also offer a range of workshops to help with your academic or digital literacy skills, and can provide feedback by email for students on low residency courses or placements.
The Writing and Learning Centre is a resource for the whole University. We support staff with their research projects and deliver academic skills workshops to support students with specific modules.
In addition to support with assignments, we offer a range of services and resources to help you with your studies and develop skills to thrive academically.
Appointments (including maths and statistics) are available in-person and online.
If you've chosen an online appointment you'll be sent a calendar invitation with a link to a Google Meet so that you can log into the appointment at the correct time. For in-person appointments, you’ll find us in the Library in room LY121.
In-person appointments are available in Locksbrook during term-time on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9.00-2.00.
You may only book one appointment slot at a time.
You can book a second appointment per assignment (once you have attended your first appointment) and have up to four for a dissertation.
Please have some work or drafts ready to share during the appointment.
Are you and your peers interested in a workshop? We may be able to offer student workshops to groups of four or more. Please send us a message via the 'Query' icon to arrange.
Email feedback is available for students on placement or low residency courses.
Please send us a 'Query', attach your work and include your student number in the message headline. Let us know what kind of help you require, for example, referencing or structure. It’s also very helpful if you include the assignment brief as well.
We endeavour to reply to queries within 3 working days, but at busy times there may be a delay of up to 5 working days before your essay feedback is available.
Our online resources on the Library and WLC Minerva community space offer hints and tips on a wide range of academic skills including academic writing, referencing, maths and statistics, digital literacy and critical thinking.
If you need help with referencing, you can drop in online to chat with an advisor about any queries. This service is available Monday - Friday, 12:00pm - 1:00pm during term time.
