Bath Spa University partners with charity to help tackle sexism in sport

Wednesday, 14 December, 2022

Bath Spa University is teaming up with Her Game Too - a charity which works to tackle sexism, and champion women in sport.

Representatives from the campaign will be holding workshops and seminars with students on the University’s new Sports Production degree course, and students will also have the chance to work with the charity, producing campaigns and materials to help raise awareness of the issues around sexism in sport.

The Sports Production course will give students real-world experience in the fast-paced sport media industry, and according to course leader Lizzie Powell, a key message running through all of the teaching is around promoting equality in sport.

She said: “We want to ensure that everything we create is a fair reflection of diversity in sport - and women’s sport is an important part of that.

“For example, major broadcasters will still talk about ‘rugby’ and ‘women’s rugby’ - and that’s not right. We should be saying ‘men’s rugby’ and ‘women’s rugby.’ It might seem like something very small, but it’s about getting the message across that women’s sport is equally as important as men’s sport.

“The number of women behind the camera in sports is also significantly lower than the number of men. We need to be encouraging young women to come forward and join the industry, and they should be able to follow their chosen career path without having to deal with sexism.

“Our partnership with Her Game Too will be invaluable for our students. Not only will they be able to gain some excellent experience through working on campaigns with the charity, but it will also help to raise their awareness of areas of sport that are facing challenges that they might not have thought of before.

“Our students are the future of sports production, and we want them to be in a position to lead on equality.”

Caz May, Founder and Director of Her Game Too, said: “It’s fantastic for us as a campaign to be involved with the great work that they are doing at Bath Spa University.

"As an anti-sexism campaign centred around equal opportunity, we are huge advocates for promoting women in sport so this sort of partnership is extremely exciting.

"We can’t wait to see what work we can do together and how we can support the work of Bath Spa University.”
