Karen McInnes – Bath Spa University

Personal statement 

Karen is a Senior Lecturer for Early Childhood in the School of Education. She is the Award Leader for the MA Education (Early Childhood Studies) and teaches on the Preschool Education Degree (China) programme, taught at Hunan University of Humanities, Science and Technology (HUHST), Hunan Province, China.

She began her career as a speech and language therapist, retraining as an early years teacher and teaching in schools in London and Bristol. She is also a qualified play therapist. She received an MSc in Play Therapy with distinction and has worked therapeutically with children in the primary age range. She has taught early years education, psychology, and play therapy at various HEIs in the UK in a variety of internal and external facing roles.

Her research interests are in play and playfulness, not only in early years but across the lifespan. She also has an interest in participatory research methods with children. Her PhD was on the role of playful practice for learning in the early years. She has worked within the charitable and not-for-profit sectors with Barnardo's and the National Development Team for Inclusion as a senior researcher and evaluation manager conducting funded research and evaluation for various organisations. 

She is currently the Centre Lead for REaCH, the Centre for Research in Early Childhood and has published extensively in the field of play, playfulness and early childhood.
